The Application Process
Timing is everything when it comes to Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document).

- Biometrics: You will likely be required to attend a biometrics (fingerprinting) appointment. While you can often depart the U.S. after filing, you must return for this appointment.
- Validity: Most permits are valid for two years from the date of issuance (or one year for certain conditional residents).
Important Note: Obtaining a Re-Entry Permit does not automatically preserve your “continuous residence” for naturalization purposes. If you plan to apply for U.S. citizenship in the future, additional steps (such as Form N-470) may be required.
